The 10th TOP500 list was published at the SC97 Conference in San Jose, CA (November 15-21, 1997).
Overall, the complete list changed quite a bit. The number one computer is the Intel ASCI Red system at Sandia National Laboratory with achieved performance of over 1.3 TFlop/s using 9152 Pentium P6 processors. The number of systems which exceed 100 GFlop/s Linpack performance grew within one year from 7 to 30.
In 1997, 16 new systems appeared in the top 20 positions; 14 of them are SGI/Cray T3E systems. The number of European systems in the top 20 jumped from 2 to 6, with 11 of them located in the US and 3 in Japan. The last entry of the TOP500 list shows a performance rate of 9.5 GFlop/s compared to 4.6 GFlop/s in November 1996. The total accumulated performance of all 500 systems also grew quite substantially from 8 TFlop/s in November 1996 to 16.7 TFlop/s in November 1997
The combined company SGI/Cray is again leading the list with 216 systems. The newcomer, Sun Microsystems, appeared for the first time last year and is now in second position with 85 systems, ahead of IBM with 75 systems (IBM had 126 systems on the list last November).
With respect to the accumulated Rmax performance, SGI/Cray is also the clear leader with 7.8 TFlop/s, with Intel in second place with 1.85 Tflop/s and IBM third with 1.7 TFlop/s.
